Project Summary:
The Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR)
is a sister agency to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). Its program activities include the collection of pertinent
data from multiple sources (Federal and state EPA offices, etc.)
and performing public health assessments, research, toxicological
profiles, emergency response activities, epidemiologic investigations,
medical waste investigations, and maintenance of disease registries.
ATSDR conducts investigations and studies to determine the relationship
between exposure to hazardous substances and adverse health
effects, surveillance activities to evaluate the occurrence
of adverse health effects related to hazardous substances and
the creation and maintenance of registries of individuals exposed
to hazardous substances and diseases. These activities generate
a large volume of external and internal records in various media.
ISPA manages the Records Management System for the ATSDR,
which includes the following tasks: custody, intellectual and
physical control of all records, operation and maintenance of
four Records Centers (DHAC, OPOM, DHS, DT), retrieve and provide
access to records as requested, perform records disposition,
perform records conversion services (to electronic format),
conduct records inventories, and conduct new technology evaluation
studies, develop technical and procedural improvements, perform
user training, and provide technical assistance and administrative
support related to the operation of the RMS Records Centers.
